Nigeria Security Forces In Random Killing Following Bomb Blast-Amnesty International

The Nigerian authorities must immediately put a stop to unlawful killings by security forces, Amnesty International said today after at least 23 people were killed by police following a bomb blast on Saturday in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri.
The bomb, allegedly set off by the Islamist group Boko Haram, went off in the Budum market in central Maiduguri and injured three soldiers. According to reports received by Amnesty International, the Nigerian Joint Military Task Force (JTF) responded by shooting and killing a number of people, apparently at random, before burning down the market.
“President Goodluck Jonathan must get a grip on the Nigerian armed forces and immediately prevent them from carrying out further human rights violations and unlawful killings,” said Tawanda Hondora, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Africa.
“The government must now investigate these heinous crimes and put on trial those found to be responsible for the killings. Allowing troops to go on the rampage will not bring to justice those who carry out these terrible bomb attacks on civilians,” he said.
“While staying within the law, the government must step up efforts to bring to justice members of Boko Haram who wreck untold suffering on people in the middle belt.”
One wing of Boko Haram has reportedly disowned the bomb blast, saying it may have been carried out by a splinter group.
The JTF was set up by the federal government in June 2011 to restore order in Borno state. In recent months, Amnesty International has received numerous reports that security forces in Borno state have resorted to unlawful killings, dragnet arrests, arbitrary and unlawful detentions, extortion, and intimidation.
One human rights defender told Amnesty International “Soldiers went on the rampage. They shot several people and burned all their shops and properties and burned their cars.”
Following a bombing in Maiduguri two weeks ago, members of the JTF reportedly threatened to shoot residents if they failed to report planned attacks.

“House to house searches, brutalisation, unlawful arrests, killings and disappearances have been the operating practice in Maiduguri for some months now. Unless steps are taken to ensure security forces operate within the law and respect human rights at all times, the next time Boko Haram attacks or kills a soldier, we are likely to see the same thing happen again,” said Tawanda Hondora.
Thousands of people living in Maiduguri have already left the city; and many more continue to do so.
The JTF have also been accused of raping women during their operations in recent months.
“Allegations of rape of women by members of the JTF have to be investigated and perpetrators brought to justice, “Tawanda Hondora said.
“Survivors of rape and sexual violence must be provided with appropriate support and aftercare,” he added.
Since July 2010, attacks by people believed to be members of the religious sect Boko Haram have increased. More than 250 people have been killed in such attacks, many of which have targeted police officers and government officials.
Several religious leaders have been killed and churches have also been targeted.
Since June 2011, Boko Haram has also attacked bars and beer-gardens, killing scores of people.

Bomb scare at UNIJOS students, workers flee admin block

Barely 74 hours after suspected Boko Haram members allegedly planted a bomb at National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, University of  Jos was yesterday jolted over bomb scare.
Sources told Saturday Sun that following the bomb scare, the administrative block of the university was evacuated.
A staffer of the university, whose office is located at the administrative block, revealed: “We saw a strange man coming out of the admin block and we wonder what the man came for. The strange man does not look like any of our staff or students.”

He added: “When we went towards the direction of office he was coming, to find out if such person came there, we found out the suspect was not known as a staffer or visitor.

“We became afraid because before we came back to ask the man his mission, he was no where to be found. The man disappeared into thin air. This development scared all the staff of admin block and we had to vacate the offices, suspecting that the man must have dropped some explosives.”
Plateau State police command Public Relations Officer, ASP Apev Jacob, confirmed the incident. He said: “Anti-bomb squad went there immediately and they combed the area but found nothing harmful.”

It was gathered that the university authority had to make distress call to the police, which responded promptly by sending the anti-bomb squad to the school.
The bomb scare disrupted academic activities of students preparing for their examinations selected for Monday.
Staffers of the institution later went back to their normal duties, when no bomb was found.

Correct Me If I Am Right By Rudolf Okonkwo

Majority of Nigerians, including Northern Nigerians, agree that the killings being orchestrated across Nigeria by the Islamic group, Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram, are wrong. In English, their name means "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad". If you do a literal translation it means, "Association of Sunnis for the Propagation of Islam and for Holy War".

Ex-Borno Governor created Boko Haram – Gen Useni

ABUJA- THE Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd) yesterday gave an insight into the emergence of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram, saying that the group used to function as a political thuggery cell to a former governor of Borno State.
The retired army general who spoke with State House correspondents, after separate meetings with President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo also supported the use of force by the Nigeria Army to flush out Boko Haram, saying that “like in war, the soldiers must be working on information on the Boko Haram. Innocent ones would definitely be killed in the process of trying to dislodge the Boko Haram members from their base”.
This is just as the leadership of the ACF called for the convocation of a Northern Peace Summit to discuss and proffer possible solution to the menace of the Islamic sect, currently ravaging the region.

Gen. Useni disclosed that he had earlier warned the former governor against the use of thugs during election, saying that like in Rivers state where thuggery gave birth to militancy, Boko Haram used to be a political thug group; but later metamorphosed into a terror entity.

32-year-old twins born blind cry for help

By Gbubemi God’s Covenant Snr.

THURSDAY, May 5, 2011 was their 32nd birthday, but Taiwo and Kehinde Lawal, blind twins were separated about 300 kilometres apart, for lack of a home, the junior squatting with the mother of a blind man she hopes to marry someday, and the senior squatting on an all-male blind people’s centre in Ketu, Lagos. Nobody sent them a gift or card to wish them many happy returns of the day. Gbubemi God’s Covenant Snr. had an encounter with Kehinde and Taiwo who bemoan their fate, painting a picture of gloomy and futureless birthday for adult twins.

A marriage in sign language!

The groom, Opeoluwa Samuel Sotonwa, a lawyer, who holds a Masters degree in Law from Howard University in Washington, and in the service of the US government is also deaf, but can speak to some extent.

ONLY the unfathomable script of predestination could work out this history, which is unlikely to be equalled or beaten anytime soon. Nigerian who built his own car....

A young Nigerian engineer who built and rides in a car he built has one ambition, to build cars that will be sought after in international market.

Residents of Lagos Island and environs have now and again caught sight of a cute, rugged red SUV cruising along the highways or parked by the beaches on weekends with the slogan: ‘A question of attitude’ scrawled on its side. Don’t go shopping for it in any showroom because it is one of its kind in the whole wide world, fully Nigerian, built in Nigeria, by a Nigerian who had the ‘can do’ spirit GBUBEMI GOD’S COVENANT, SNR and DENNIS OKOSUN cruised around the Island in the jeep and filed in this report.
The young engineer is Sunday Abiodun Okpere, born on December 25, 1975 in Ebute-Metta, Lagos Mainland to Victoria and Augustine Okpere. His father was a managing director with the old National Electric Power Authority before he passed on when Sunday was only two years old.
